Connecting research with patients
Roz Katz brings training in medicinal chemistry and business to pharmaceutical commercial strategy. At the interview, she describes a new role at Astellas focused on planning for potential eye treatments early in development, after previous work nearer to product launch. Her interest is in the steps that help research become something patients can use.
Finding a use for different strengths
While studying, Katz worked in sales and reception at a sports club and discovered how much she enjoyed interacting with people. Moving from academic research into commercial work brought those interests together. It also raised doubts about her ability to think strategically; she describes an MBA as part of preparing for that transition.
Belonging and changing direction
Katz says she never doubted that she belonged in STEM. That answer sits alongside uncertainty about a particular career move. She describes equal expectations for educational achievement in her upbringing, while also acknowledging unequal domestic expectations. For students, she recommends trying work before deciding whether its appeal matches reality, and allowing yourself to change direction.
